Hey there,
If we haven’t met, hi! My name is Tali deGroot and I’m J Street’s Vice President of Political & Digital Strategy. When I’m not fighting alongside each of you for a better approach from Washington toward Israel-Palestine, you can find me proudly rocking an analog flip phone, organizing the D.C. "dumb phone" community and urging everyone in my life to spend less time on their screens (and more time with one another!).
It’s a well-documented fact that social media is driving our society to extremes, making it harder for us to listen to each other and find common ground while fueling a loneliness crisis that spans generations.
As advocates for Israeli-Palestinian peace, we understand better than most how the perpetual blame game and unwillingness to engage with those with whom we disagree makes conflict resolution impossible, condemning us to a horrific, intractable status quo.
That’s why I’m urging you to ditch the doom scrolling and join me and thousands of other pro-Israel, pro-peace, pro-democracy supporters in Washington, D.C. from February 28 to March 3! We’ll learn, advocate and, most importantly, be in community together.
I’ve been active with J Street for nearly 15 years. Despite how exhausting this work can be, convening with folks who share my values gives me the hope and energy I need to keep going.
I believe it’s a radical pro-democracy act to choose community over division, gathering over loneliness and collective advocacy over click-tivism. There is no saving our democracy without a true reckoning with the corrupting nature of our devices, and that starts with each of us choosing to look up from our screens and engage with our communities.
The only way we’ll make progress on advancing our values is by cutting through the noise and really listening – so I hope you’ll join us to be part of something special.
