Houston DSA

Organizing for Power Workshop, Canvass to Demand Immigrant Justice, City Hall Mobilization and much more!

Howdy comrades!

In this era of historic struggle, Houston DSA is focused on building our organizing capabilities and empowering our members and the working class to fight for what we deserve. We have some exciting events coming up, from weekly canvassing, organizing workshops, to mobilization efforts to Houston City Hall!

Read on below for more details.

Membership Milestone - We've reached 900 members!

Our chapter just passed 900 members, and our membership committee is beginning the year by setting up new teams to start these comrades off on the right foot! Our Onboarding, Renewals, and Orientation teams will help ensure every new member gets plugged into important work. Whether you're a veteran socialist or brand-new organizer, getting involved with a MemComm team is a great way to develop skills in one-on-one organizing conversations and facilitating group discussion. No experience needed - we will train you!

Pack City Hall - January 27th!

For months Houston Leads and our Immigrant Justice Campaign (IJC) have been informing people about HPD collaboration with ICE, talking to affected communities, and building public pressure to make the City Council defend immigrants.

On Tuesday, January 26th, we are mobilizing to the City Council’s evening public meetings at 5:00pm to make the voices of immigrants and our demands clear. City Council must limit collaboration, end HPD calling ICE at traffic stops, and fund the Houston Immigrant Legal Service Collaborative.

To testify at City Council, you must register by Monday, January 26th. To register, call (832) 393-1100 or email [email protected]v. We recommend you do both to ensure you secure a spot on the testimony list.

Canvass to Demand Immigrant Justice across the greater Houston area

We have multiple canvassing events coming up this weekend! Join us as we reach out to Houstonians, share important information about their rights, and offer resources to support our immigrant communities. Fight to demand the city defend immigrants! Training will be provided.

No Shortcuts: Organizing For Power Workshop! Learn how to build organizing power with us this January

Join us this Saturday, January 24th, for the last session workshop on Jane McAlevey’s, No Shortcuts: Organizing For Power In the New Gilded Age at the Carnegie Neighborhood Library & Center for Learning.

Our final workshop session will cover the following chapters: “Chapter 4., Chicago Teachers: Building a Resilient Union”, “Chapter 5. Smithfield Foods: A Huge Success You’ve Hardly Heard About”, and “Chapter 7. Conclusion: Pretend Power vs. Actual Power” before attending.

McAlevey and her work have influenced democratic movements winning real power for the working class, from Starbucks baristas to public school teachers to workers fighting to make their unions more responsive! We’ll examine our work in DSA, how we can build real material power, and how to win a better world.

All are welcome to attend the session without reading but you will not be able to fully engage in the workshop.

Houston Chevron Marathon Protest Recap

Last week, our Stop Fueling Genocide campaign protested the Chevron Houston Marathon. There we had spread our message of boycotting Chevron and had positive interactions with runners. Our banner was even briefly seen in the ESPN and Channel 13 coverage of the frontrunners!

Join us as we continue to pressure Chevron and educate our fellow Houstonians when we picket a local Chevron station on 1/31 from 3-5 pm! Location to be revealed closer to the picket date so keep your eyes on the Houston DSA Calendar for further information.
