Interim Commerce Director Sarah Clifthorne
*OLYMPIA *– Today Governor Bob Ferguson announced the appointment Sarah Clifthorne as interim director of the Washington State Department of Commerce following the departure of Director Joe Nguyễn.
Nguyễn was one of Governor Ferguson’s first appointments to his executive cabinet, and served as director for one year. Prior to joining Commerce, Nguyễn was elected to two terms as a state senator, and worked in the finance and tech sectors. He departs the agency to join the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce as president and chief executive officer.

“Joe has been an active and engaged leader, and I am grateful for his service to our state,” Governor Ferguson said. “He’s welcome back to my administration any time. With her experience, I know Sarah will provide a steady hand during this transition.”
“This is a time of transition for Commerce, and I plan to support the agency’s employees as we move into our next chapter,” she said. “From an operations standpoint, the people of Washington can expect Commerce to continue our focus on strengthening partnerships. It’s an honor to step into this role on behalf of Governor Ferguson’s administration and to continue working alongside the caring people at this agency, who truly show up for the communities we serve.”
Clifthorne has served as deputy director at Commerce since February 2025. Over the past year, she provided strategic leadership across more than 400 programs within Commerce. In her new role, Clifthorne will work closely with the agency’s chief operating officer, chief of staff and the executive leadership team to help with the transition process.
Clifthorne comes with nearly two decades of public service experience, including a staff leadership role in the Washington State Senate.
Clifthorne’s appointment was effective Jan. 20.
