BJS FY25 Census of Law Enforcement Training Academies (CLETA) and BJS FY25 Survey of Public Defenders (SPD) funding applications are open

BJS is seeking applicants to administer two of its data collections.

BJS FY25 Census of Law Enforcement Training Academies (CLETA)

The CLETA collection provides national statistics on recruits, staff,
training curricula, equipment, and facilities from training academies
that are responsible for administering mandatory basic training to
newly appointed or elected law enforcement officers. These academies
are operated by state, county, and municipal agencies and by
universities, colleges, and technical schools.

BJS FY25 Survey of Public Defenders (SPD)

This collection implements a full national collection of the SPD using
the survey instrument and recommendations from the 2021 SPD pilot
study and 2024 Census of Public Defender Offices frame as the
universe for the sample. The goal of the FY2025 SPD is to collect and
disseminate national statistics and data about the characteristics,
activities, and workload of the estimated 15,000 public defenders in the
United States.

Both applications are submitted in a two-step process, each with its
own deadline:

  1. Step 1: Submit an SF-424 in Grants.gov. The Grants.gov form is due February 12, 2026, by 11:59 p.m. ET for CLETA, and
    March 2, 2026, by 11:59 p.m. ET for SPD.
  1. Step 2: Submit the full application, including attachments, in
    JustGrants.usdoj.gov. The full JustGrants application is due by February 19, 2026, by 8:59 p.m. ET for CLETA, and
    March 9, 2026, by 8:59 p.m. ET for SPD.
