We’re at an inflection
point, John.
Since Donald Trump was inaugurated for the second time, one year ago
today, we have seen irreparable damage done.

From the literal destruction of the East Wing of the White House to
tearing down our economy, international standing, and Constitution, this
administration has inflicted far more lasting damage than we could have
even imagined in just 12 months. He’s thrown every norm of governance out
the window and seems intent on creating a permanent MAGA authoritarian
regime.

He’s sent armed, masked thugs into our cities to terrorize our
communities. He’s turned the independent Justice Department into his
private army of lawyers to exact revenge on his political opposition —
including me.

He is going after six other Democratic lawmakers for saying that troops
are obligated to refuse illegal orders and must abide by the Constitution.
He’s now suggested we shouldn’t even have midterms.

He’s making sweeping cuts in funds appropriated by Congress for any
program he doesn’t like. He’s decimated the civil service and created
chaos at all levels of our federal government.

He has withheld food, housing, and health care assistance for people in
need – just because they live in Blue states. His tariffs have added a
huge burden to consumers already facing an affordability crisis. His
administration has been downright hostile to any attempts to protect our
environment, making it as easy as possible for polluters, fossil fuel
companies, and toxic waste dumpers to make our air dirtier and water less
clean.

This is not even remotely a complete list. Not by a long shot.

All of this has happened with the acquiescence of a Republican Congress
and captured courts, which have abdicated their constitutional imperative
to provide a check on executive authority.

But this year has also brought back our ability to resist, to fight back,
to come together to hold him and his MAGA counterparts accountable.

Americans are showing up in huge numbers to protect their neighbors, to
resist this takeover of our country. And they showed up at the ballot box
in 2025 in elections from Virginia to Georgia, New Jersey, and California
to reject Republicans. We can take our country back this year by flipping
the House and Senate.

That will take strong leadership. I've put myself on top of the
president’s enemies list in the service of our democracy, and I’m proud to
be there.
