John,
We’ve gotten a few questions about why we have officially changed our organization’s name to Redistricting Action.
Here’s what I say: Our new name reflects both who we are and what this moment demands.
Redistricting is no longer a once-every-decade process — it’s an ongoing struggle for a representative democracy. And we are here to take action. To organize. To make sure every map, in every state, truly represents the people.
These are existential times for our democracy. In the days ahead, as many as seven states could start the process of redrawing their congressional maps. And while the nation’s redistricting crisis is already expanding, we’re awaiting a Supreme Court ruling that could weaken the Voting Rights Act and give cover to several other states to manipulate their own maps and take power away from communities of color.
We are building Redistricting Action to meet this moment by providing grassroots activists with all of the information, tools, and opportunities needed to defend our democracy.
With your generosity, we can strengthen these efforts on the front lines of present and future attacks — and ensure that our democracy emerges from this crisis stronger, fairer, and firmly in the hands of the American people. [[link removed]]
Our long-term vision remains the same: The United States needs national redistricting standards that require all states to follow the same rules, ensuring fair, independently drawn maps and a political system that reflects the will of the people.
Because redistricting has become weaponized by power-hungry politicians who want to skirt accountability, we are empowering activists right now to take on this very challenge.
Make a grassroots donation today to help deliver high-quality training, step-by-step information, and more support for people who are fighting gerrymandering across the country. [[link removed]]
You and I know that our work isn’t easy, but when we’ve invested in our mission and when we’ve organized where it matters most, we’ve won. Our collective action to defend fair maps for all is powerful — and right now, it’s more important than ever to keep up this critical work.
Thank you for moving our democracy forward,
— Biz
