You’re an ambitious professional in a tough media industry. How do you position yourself to seize career opportunities, regardless of where you're starting from?

It comes down to navigating workplace dynamics, according to Poynter faculty, Kerwin Speight. This March, he teaches Lead with Influence ([link removed]) — a career development course designed for media pros ready to grow their stature.

“The program ([link removed]) prepares participants by helping them position themselves for the next move,” Speight said. “It also helps them understand how they lead and communicate within their organization."

Climbing the ladder in journalism isn't what most people think, claims Tony Elkins, director of Poynter's leadership programs and faculty for Essential Skills for New Managers ([link removed]) .

“In journalism leadership, there are two jobs: The daily output of whatever team you’re responsible for and the actual job of managing the people doing those tasks. The latter is a much more taxing and involved job than most realize,” Elkins said. “This workshop ([link removed]) focuses on what I describe as human-centered skills. It means we spend time learning how to better communicate, give and receive feedback, manage conflict resolution and develop a strategy for thoughtful leadership.”

Both Poynter faculty agree: Communication acts as the bridge to career development. Hear more from Tony and Kerwin in our free LinkedIn Live event, "How to Communicate Like a Boss: Breakdown from Poynter's Leadership Faculty ([link removed]) ," at 12:30 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Whether you're leading a team or navigating a new role, the way you show up (both in the office and on screen) defines your impact. Join us ([link removed]) to discover your unique communication and leadership style and learn how to adapt it for lasting career confidence.

** TIP OF THE WEEK

My pro tip: Remember the people. When I was a crime reporter, the last story I covered was a drug deal turned murder, with the dealer killing the young man.

The trial was about a week, and deliberations took several days, including through the weekend. In Virginia, you cannot bring electronics into the courts, so we didn't have cell phones. I played a lot of People Magazine crossword puzzles with the victim’s family. But that time enabled me to get a portrait of him, as a son, as a brother, as a family friend.

We are an industry forced to produce quickly, but if we take a little bit of time, our work is better for it and we can keep a degree of humanity in what we do. Because isn't that kind of the point?
