What's the #TeaInTally?
June 4 , 2025
Dear John,
Our fight for climate justice won’t happen overnight – it’s built block by block, campaign by campaign – by people like you refusing to let billionaires sacrifice our future for profit.
This legislative session showed us exactly what we’re up against: corporate lobbyists writing laws to keep us hooked on plastics and fossil fuels, while working families struggle with rising bills, lack of hurricane relief efforts, and extreme heat . But we also saw glimmers of what’s possible when we organize.
Here’s the real score from Tallahassee – the good, the bad, and the battles ahead in our fight for a Florida where people and planet come before profits. Let’s get into it. ⬇️
🌴 Good Bills That Passed
✅ HB 209 – Protecting Our State Parks
This critical bill ensures that Florida’s state parks remain natural treasures, not profit-driven developments. No more golf courses, resorts, or commercial projects that harm ecosystems. Our parks are for preservation, not exploitation.
❤️🩹 Good Bills We Hope to See Again
⏸️ HB 419/SB 330 – The PAUSE Act
This would have protected families by pausing utility shutoffs during extreme heat (90°F or higher), freezing temperatures (below 32°F), or state emergencies. No Floridian should lose power when their health is at risk. While lawmakers failed to act this session, we will continue organizing until common-sense legislation like this prevails over corporate handouts.
⚡️ HB 1319/SB 354 – Holding Utilities Accountable
These bills would have required justification for rate hikes, ensuring transparency and fairness in the process. Instead, Floridians will continue to face rising bills without proper oversight, while shareholders of utility providers like FPL continue to boast significant profits.
🚫 Bad Bills That (Thankfully) Died
❌ HB 565/1609/SB 1822 – Plastic Pollution Giveaway
These bills would have stripped local governments’ power to regulate single-use plastics, such as water bottles, takeout containers, and packaging that pollute our beaches and waterways. Thanks to advocates like you, Big Plastic didn’t win this time.
⚠️ Bad Bill That Passed
❌ SB 1574 – Subsidizing False "Renewable" Gas
This bill pushes investment in "renewable natural gas" (RNG/biogas) — a misleading label. RNG still emits greenhouse gases, exacerbating climate change and air quality issues. The passing of this bill signals yet another step backward for clean energy in the Sunshine State.
👀 What’s Next?
While we celebrate wins like HB 209, we must continue to fight for climate action, clean air, and public health.
Right now, we’re fighting FPL’s request for a NINE-BILLION-DOLLAR rate hike – the largest in U.S. history. We are demanding that Florida’s Public Service Commission listen to working Floridians and our families by rejecting this attempt to deepen the pockets of shareholders. Add your name to our petition by clicking here, and stay tuned for more ways to take action. [[link removed]] [[link removed]]
