Dear John xxxxxx,
The world feels more uncertain than it has for a long time. Turbulence is being felt more deeply. Events are changing at a rapid pace. And I know many of you will be feeling increasingly worried about what this means for Britain.
In moments like this, what matters most is being absolutely clear about the values that continue to guide us, even as circumstances change. Because these values are not a reaction to today’s headlines. They were built patiently over time. They are rooted in social justice, cooperation and respect for international law – the same values on which the Labour Party was built generations ago.
And while we must always be pragmatic in how we pursue our interests, we are resolute in defending those values when it matters most.
That’s why today I gave a speech which made it clear that the future status of Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone. Their right to self-determination is fundamental – and we support it.
Britain’s relationships with its allies are not abstract. They deliver real security for working people – protecting our borders, strengthening our economy and keeping this country safe in an increasingly dangerous world. And our alliance with the US is one of our oldest and most important.
But mature alliances are not about pretending differences do not exist. They endure when they are rooted in respect, honesty, and a shared commitment to solving problems together.
That’s why I also made clear that the proposed use of tariffs against allies by the United States is completely wrong. It is not the right way to resolve differences within an alliance. Nor is it helpful to frame efforts to strengthen Greenland’s security against Russia as a justification for economic pressure.
Because while Britain is a pragmatic country, being pragmatic does not mean being passive. And partnership does not mean abandoning principle. That is why it matters to be clear about who we stand with, what we stand for, and where our interests lie.
We will work with our allies – in Europe, across NATO, and with the United States. We will keep dialogue open. We will defend international law. And we will use the full strength of government - at home and abroad to protect the security, living standards, and future of the British people.
That is the approach I will take as Prime Minister. And that is the responsibility that this moment demands.
Thank you,
Keir Starmer Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party
