John,
Today, as we celebrate the life and legacy of the great Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I know it’s a frightening time for many throughout our country.
ICE is conducting violent raids, beating, detaining, and even killing people based only on the color of their skin or the language they speak. It’s a throwback to an earlier time in American history that many believed we had moved past.
But that earlier time in our history also proves that we can get through this. Dr. King committed his life to the fight for racial and economic justice, and real progress was achieved as a direct result of his work.
We have our work cut out for us right now, but we too can defend the progress that Dr. King helped to make and keep up the fight. And it’s crucial that we don’t become complacent or allow ourselves to be intimidated into silence.
Trump and his MAGA allies have threatened our democracy, threatened some of our most fundamental rights, and threaten to keep it up as long as they continue to hold power.
As a Member of Congress, I’m working each and every day to defend our rights. And outside of Congress, I’m working to build the nonviolent resistance movement we’ll need to protect and revitalize our democracy.
But it’s going to take all of us to achieve that goal.
So before I sign off, I want to leave you with this. The night before he was assassinated, Dr. King noted to a crowd of striking workers that “The world is all messed up. Trouble is in the land. Confusion all around. But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough, can you see the stars.”
He was right then, and he is right now. We will make it through this together.
