“I Have a Dream” wasn’t just about abolishing racism in our hearts. It was a call to action to tear down institutional racism written into our laws and the Constitution. 

And from Dr. King’s struggle was born a legacy that is likely now to be almost completely undone in law, if not in spirit, by a hostile ultra-conservative Supreme Court and a fascist Republican Party controlled by one deranged old man.

The Supreme Court is poised to kill the beating heart of the Voting Rights Act (1965) that forced segregated Southern states to stop gerrymandering on the basis of race. 

And now Dr. King’s Dream could become a Nightmare: Donald Trump’s MAGA movement is on the cusp of unraveling this crucial legacy, opening the floodgates for racist gerrymandering in red states. 

Everything Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought and died for is at stake.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has already called for the Florida Legislature to wait for the inevitable SCOTUS ruling gutting the Voting Rights Act so that they can savagely and selectively target Black communities—spreading out Black voters across twisted gerrymandered MAGA districts to completely nullify the power of their vote.

Trump is honoring and continuing not MLK’s legacy, but the legacy of the bigots that hosed, beat with batons, and set loose police dogs to attack and injure Civil Rights protesters. 

John, this is a renewed call to action: we must take up this fight to counter MAGA’s winner-takes-all strategy to steal the 2026 midterm election and strip away the voting power of minorities across the country. 

Platitudes about Dr. King are worthless without action. Let’s act today.
