John,
Today, we honor and commemorate the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a trailblazer for civil rights and justice for Black Americans.
However, the holiday is bittersweet this year.
What has been happening with ICE has been horrifying. The Trump administration has been flooding Black and Brown communities with under-trained and over-aggressive agents, inviting abuse, mistakes, and tragedies to occur.
This violence has been fueled by a president who rejects equality and peddles in hate and fear. Last week, Trump went on record to state that civil rights led to white people being “very badly treated” and doubled down on his worldview that equity has led to “reverse discrimination.”
Dr. King and many other civil rights leaders sacrificed and put their lives on the line to ensure every American has the ability to participate in our democracy, live free from police brutality, and be treated as an equal. But now, these values are under threat.
We cannot for a moment take our fundamental rights for granted. The Republican Party has made it clear that they intend to reverse all of the progress that we have made and enact new obstacles in our fight for a more just and equitable world. It’s up to us to defend our rights and ensure that our nation moves forward, not backwards.
In Martin Luther King Jr.’s memory, let’s commit to continuing to bend the arc toward justice.
Together,
Shontel Brown
