Dear John,

We’re writing to alert you to a serious and urgent threat to peaceful protest in the UK - one that could have far-reaching consequences for animal protection campaigners and beyond.

A controversial Statutory Instrument has now passed MPs and is heading to the House of Lords - and it could seriously undermine the right to peaceful protest.

The amendment would classify “Life Sciences infrastructure” as Key National Infrastructure, greatly expanding police powers to restrict protests around animal testing facilities. If approved, peaceful and non-violent protests could be criminalised, with penalties including unlimited fines or even prison sentences.

This is deeply concerning. Peaceful protest has been one of the most powerful tools animal campaigners have ever had - exposing cruelty, challenging secrecy and driving progress when the system has failed animals.

As the SI moves through the House of Lords, there is still time to stop it - but only if we act together.

Although this issue goes beyond our organisation’s core focus, it represents a wider erosion of democratic rights that affects all campaigners. If peaceful protest against cruelty can be restricted in one area, it sets a dangerous precedent for others.

Thank you for standing up for animals, for campaigners, and for the right to peaceful protest.

For the animals,

P.S. If peaceful protest can be restricted in one area, it sets a dangerous precedent for all causes. Please take a moment to sign the petition and share it with others - every voice counts. ([link removed])
