Friends, this is important — and I want to be real with you.
We’re expecting ICE to be in Lewiston and Portland as early as today (Monday). I’ve said it before, and I won’t shy away from it now: ICE should stay the hell away from Maine.
But we also have to deal with the reality in front of us, and that means being prepared when Trump’s rogue, secret police force comes knocking on our doors. The good people of Minneapolis showed us the way forward by peacefully protesting ICE’s raids in their city. And now it’s on us to look out for our neighbors and protect our communities as best we can.
Here in Maine, the people understand solidarity and standing up for each other. Folks at the top will try to call our outrage “anti-American,” but we know better. There’s nothing more American than speaking up when the rights and freedoms of people are trampled upon.
And for those who don’t get it yet, let me say this: using your voice and standing up is important, not just for yourself but for everyone around you. What happened in Minnesota shows us that it could be any one of us .
That’s why we need to show up for our neighbors this week — not with violence or chaos, but by standing in solidarity. As Governor Walz said in Minnesota last week, you can help by bearing witness. You have the constitutional right to peacefully observe and film ICE agents in public. And when the time comes, we will hold them accountable.
The ACLU of Maine has put together clear guidance on how to respond, what your rights are, and how to protect yourself and others if ICE shows up, which you can find here [[link removed]] .
But one critical thing to remember is that you do not have to open the door to your home unless the agent has a signed warrant from a judge. An ICE “warrant” signed by an ICE officer does not give them the right to enter your home.
I know this is scary. I think Renee Good had every right to be afraid — because I know sure as hell that I would be too. Please take a few minutes to read this information and share it with people you care about. Knowing your rights can keep you and others safe.
And one more thing: I respect and believe in real law enforcement. Hell, police officers have covered my butt plenty of times at picket lines, logging blockades, and other peaceful protests over the years. I’m grateful for them, and their dedication to keeping our communities safe. But what ICE is now doing isn’t law enforcement. We can’t stand for it, and we can’t be silent.
I’ll continue to share updates as we learn more — including ways to stand with threatened communities, support our neighbors, and give aid to those impacted. For now, please know that I will continue to stand with Maine people and directly in the way of anyone threatening them.
In solidarity,
Troy Jackson
