“True education,” as Dr. King puts it, pursues something larger than the aggregation of facts or the ability to earn a college degree. A true education equips a student with not only the skills and experience to uplift oneself, one’s family and one’s community—but the deep-seated responsibility to do so.
That is character, as we at UNCF understand it. Character instilled within the halls of every HBCU, which unites generations of their graduates over almost two centuries.
This year, we are guided by Dr. King’s legacy of service as we work to give students the higher education opportunities they deserve and support our HBCUs. We will do all we can to emulate his courage and strength as we face challenges like new cuts to federal financial aid, rising costs and funding gaps, which would make education unattainable for so many hard-working students. Your gift can help us fight against these obstacles.
We thank you, Dr. King, for your invaluable service, for your leadership and life-changing ideas and for your sacrifice.
If you would like to join us in our mission to support HBCUs and talented, deserving students, we invite you to make a gift in celebration of Dr. King’s legacy.
