Friend,

Today, we honor the life, legacy, and wisdom of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

As a professor of writing and rhetoric, every semester I taught “Letter from Birmingham Jail” where Dr. King urgently writes about our moral duty to act against injustice – a duty we share today as much as we did in 1963.

As our country and our democracy face unprecedented challenges, I recall Dr. King’s warning: "We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people."

Today and always, Dr. King’s legacy lives on in the extraordinary advances we have made thus far and in the good work yet to be done.

This MLK Day, I join you in remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, his passion for civil rights and his message of equality and justice.

Respectfully,

Madeleine
