Email from Rep. Miller-Meeks Miller-Meeks Weekly Script January 18th, 2025 View as Webpage Over $3 Million Secured for Southeast Iowa! This week, the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act of 2026 passed the Senate and is now headed to the President’s desk to be signed into law. I proudly voted in favor of this legislation, which delivers targeted investments in public safety, water infrastructure, and housing development across Southeast Iowa. This bill includes over $3 million in Community Project Funding (CPF) for Iowa’s First Congressional District. These investments will help fund smart public safety upgrades in Oskaloosa, clean water infrastructure in Muscatine, and new housing developments in Knoxville. I’m proud to support legislation that cuts spending, cracks down on waste and fraud, and delivers real results for the people of Iowa. Community Project Funding Secured for Iowa’s First Congressional District includes: $500,000 for the SAFECity Initiative in Oskaloosa: Led by the Oskaloosa Police Department, this initiative brings advanced public safety technology to the community. It includes license plate recognition systems, new body and in-car cameras, upgraded police facilities, school safety panic buttons, a real-time crime monitoring system, and a search-and-rescue drone. The investment will help prevent crime, improve emergency response, and keep the community safe—all without local tax increases. $2,000,000 for the Papoose Creek Redundant Force Main in Muscatine: This project will construct new force main segments to increase wastewater system capacity, reduce combined sewer overflows during heavy rain events, and provide backup infrastructure during maintenance or emergencies. $750,000 for the Veterans District Sewer Project in Knoxville: Funding will help build a sanitary lift station and storm and sewer lines to serve over 110 acres of future housing development at the former VA campus, now known as the Veterans District—expanding housing and revitalizing the area. This legislation continues House Republicans’ work to cut wasteful spending, rein in federal overreach, and ensure taxpayer dollars are used efficiently to directly strengthen our communities and deliver real results for Iowans. With this funding, the total amount of Community Project Funding I have secured for Southeast Iowa now exceeds $8 million! I will continue to invest in our communities and help deliver them the resources they need to thrive. Representing Iowa's First District Great meeting with Aluminum Metals North America. We discussed the challenges facing the U.S. aluminum industry, including unfair trade practices from China, and the importance of strengthening our domestic secondary aluminum market. A strong, competitive aluminum supply chain is vital for Arconic in Iowa, ALL American manufacturing, and our national security. It was nice meeting with David Gregor, a participant in the State Department’s Bundestag Youth Exchange Program, currently studying at Kirkwood Community College. Hearing about his experience living in Swisher, Iowa and the opportunities this incredible program provides for cultural exchange and global learning was truly inspiring. It was wonderful meeting with Growth Energy to discuss the need to pass year-round E15. We also talked about the Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act, which would lower gas costs for Iowans, reduce emissions, and prevent fuel supply disruptions. This week I sat down with Mayor Brad Bark and city leaders in Muscatine to discuss how the $2 million in Community Project Funding I secured for vital water infrastructure will be implemented, and how I can continue delivering federal support to improve lives, strengthen local infrastructure, and invest in Muscatine’s future. Thank you Sheriff Ron Witt and congratulations as you retire from Mahaska County Sheriff’s office. For 35 years you’ve kept people safe and kept the peace. It was a great turnout despite frigid temperatures and snow squalls at the grand opening of Gray Moon Public Market in Newton this week! This revitalized Montgomery Ward building is now a vibrant community hub, supporting local vendors, boosting small business, and preserving a historic downtown landmark. A fantastic investment in Newton’s future! Committee Hearings I joined an Energy and Commerce hearing to discuss protecting America's energy infrastructure from growing cyber and physical threat landscapes. Our electronic grid faces a wide range of risks, including those posed by ideologically motivated domestic groups. Securing the grid requires strong partnerships across the government and the private sector, asa well as fixing vulnerabilities in the energy supply chain. Floor Speeches I honored the life and legacy of a friend and pioneer in Iowa, Dave Streb. Dave was the co-owner of Streb Construction company, along with his brother Steve, where for decades they helped build the backbone of our communities. Through his leadership, Streb construction became a trusted name, importing good paying jobs and helping communities grow and connect. He leaves a lasting imprint on Iowas landscape and an even greater impact on the people who knew him. He will be deeply missed and his legacy will endure in every mile laid and in every life connected. A big congratulations to Jack and Charlie Winslow, on earning first place at the Iowa State Automotive Dealers Association High School Skills Contest in Des Moines. Jack and Charlie worked hard to represent Pleasant Vally High School and to show their skill and dedication to automotive technology and repair. I could not be prouder to recognize Jack and Charlie for all their hard work and for this amazing accomplishment! Congratulations to my constituent Kate Giannini of Washington County, for receiving the prestigious Fulbright Specialist Award to the Netherlands. Kate will complete a project at Deltares, a major technological institute in the Netherlands; focused on environmental science, knowledge-sharing, and building lasting partnerships that benefit communities in the United States and abroad. We are proud to have her representing Iowa and to recognize this amazing achievement and opportunity. Sincerely, Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks Visit My Website ### Rep.
