Iran is facing its most severe crisis in since its 1979 revolution. Amid a collapsing currency and rampant inflation, protests began spreading in late December before growing to include every one of Iran’s 31 provinces. The regime of Ayatollah Khamenei has responded with brutal repression, with as many as 20,000 protesters reportedly killed. President Trump had threatened a U.S. response against the Iranian regime, but it isn’t yet clear if U.S. action is coming or what form it would take.

 

This is a fast-moving situation with major implications for the United States and the region.
