Iran is facing its most severe crisis in since its 1979 revolution. Amid a collapsing currency and rampant inflation, protests began spreading in late December before growing to include every one of Iran’s 31 provinces. The regime of Ayatollah Khamenei has responded with brutal repression, with as many as 20,000 protesters reportedly killed. President Trump had threatened a U.S. response against the Iranian regime, but it isn’t yet clear if U.S. action is coming or what form it would take.
This is a fast-moving situation with major implications for the United States and the region. To help us understand what is happening on the ground, how the Iranian government is responding, No Labels is hosting a call on Tuesday, January 20, at 3:00 PM ET, with Jim Hanson, Chief Strategist for the Middle East Forum and a former U.S. Army Special Forces officer, and Benjamin Baird, Director of MEF Action and a U.S. Army infantry veteran specializing in Middle East policy. They will walk through what is driving the unrest, how the regime is responding, and what scenarios could unfold in the weeks ahead.
