I’m not afraid to admit this, but some of the most inspiring leadership I have seen lately didn’t come from a seasoned politician or a floor debate.
It came from a group of fifth graders.
Earlier this week, I had the joy of seeing Charlie Couch sworn in as Nebraska’s very first Kid Governor. She stood in our beautiful State Capitol and spoke with a level of clarity and heart that would move anyone to tears. Charlie ran on a platform of cancer awareness, inspired by her own family’s journey, and she is already working on ways to support other children facing similar challenges.
Watching Charlie and her student cabinet take their oaths of office reminded me why I chose to serve in the first place.
We often get caught up in the noise of the day-to-day work in Lincoln. It is easy to lose sight of the fact that the decisions made in the Unicameral today create the foundation for the world these children will inherit tomorrow.
I want to go back to the Capitol to make sure that foundation is strong, compassionate, and worthy of the dreams of kids like Charlie.
These young leaders aren't interested in partisan bickering or political games. They are interested in how they can help their neighbors, protect our environment, and make sure every student in their school has what they need to succeed.
That's the kind of Nebraska I am fighting for every single day.
