The Clean Air Act exists to protect people from harmful pollutants—such as ethylene oxide, mercury, and lead—known to cause cancer and other serious health harms. But instead of enforcing the law, Trump is siding with corporate polluters and putting our communities at risk.
So far, 188 exemptions have already been granted to coal power plants, chemical manufacturers, commercial sterilizers, and other polluters. Another 366 are eligible for the same two-year exemption.
Nearly 4.6 million people live within two miles of at least one exemption-eligible facility, and more than 4,300 schools and childcare centers are within two miles of at least one of the exemption-eligible facilities. That means millions of people–including children—are breathing more toxic air and facing increased cancer risks.
And, it’s no accident. Emails between Trump’s political appointees and facility operators show that the EPA is intentionally catering to corporate polluters by soliciting exemption requests and rushing the process to deliver them. No applications or public comment period. No community input or oversight.
We must stop them now.
Tell Congress: We need our leaders to step up and ensure the EPA complies with the Clean Air Act and implements science-based rules to protect health and to ensure our communities' safety over polluters' profits!
