Our system of checks and balances exists for a reason

Hi John,

Recently, President Trump announced that he would be stopping federal payments to states he claimed had so-called sanctuary cities. In addition to being a transparent attempt to punish states he considers political enemies, this is also likely illegal.

Article I of the Constitution clearly states that Congress, not the executive branch, decides what funds go where.

This is by design, not accident. It's all part of our system of checks and balances, a system that is supposed to keep any one branch from dominating the other two and ensure that government works for the people.

But right now, the executive branch is ignoring the balance of power our nation is founded on.

It's time for us to tell Congress to take back their power and hold the executive branch accountable.
