Next month, the Parent Action Network (PAN)—the grassroots initiative of Smart Approaches to Marijuana—will hold its annual training and Hill day in Washington, D.C. As you may know, PAN trains parents whose children and families have been harmed by marijuana use. PAN also provides a platform and opportunity for these parents to tell their stories.

This training and Hill day are crucial for elected officials and staff: They put faces and names to the ongoing tragedies caused by commercialized marijuana. The stories of PAN parents have proven invaluable in helping SAM enact change.

Two years ago, the SAM Action federal affairs team set up a meeting with PAN parents and Representative Mary Miller (IL). At the time, Rep. Miller was unaware of the harms of hemp-derived THC intoxicants. Inspired by SAM Action’s advocacy and the stories of our PAN parents, Rep. Miller became a champion for closing the Farm Bill’s hemp loophole. She put her name on legislative language to take hemp-derived intoxicants off of shelves; in November 2025, that language was signed into law.

Given the need to protect the federal ban on hemp-derived THC, it is vitally important to ensure that officials can place a human face on the tragedies that this drug causes. And that’s doubly true given the Trump Administration's move to continue the Biden-era rescheduling of marijuana.

This training day requires travel, meals, and an overnight stay in D.C. Many of these families want to attend, but the financial burden of trying to help their loved ones has made that difficult or impossible.
