Hello friend,
Tuesday, January 20th, marks one year since Donald Trump and his band of marauders issued a 90 day “freeze” of all US foreign aid--which has now lasted nearly a year. Soon after, Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), empowered by Trump, made it their mission to shut down USAID. These rash decisions eliminated programs that supported access to contraception, HIV/AIDS medication, maternal health and safe delivery kits, child nutrition assistance, and countless other efforts.
Experts estimated that over the course of one year without a US contribution to international family planning, there would be 34,000 preventable pregnancy-related deaths in developing regions. And if these foreign aid cuts continue, researchers estimate that there will be 14 million additional overall deaths — over 4.5 million of them children under the age of 5, by 2030.
To make matters worse, the Trump administration withdrew from 31 United Nations entities last week, including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which provides family planning and maternal and child health care to people in over 150 countries.
And all the while, Trump and his unqualified cabal act under the guise of a “pro-life” agenda. What is pro-life about taking away life-saving care from pregnant women in the most vulnerable regions of the world? What is pro-life about eliminating access to vital medications for people who need them the most.
As we count down to this fraught one-year anniversary, we invite you to join us for a conversation with health advocates from Uganda and Kenya who have been directly impacted by the loss of US foreign assistance. During this webinar, we will learn what the real impact has been for them and how the path forward is being drawn.
