Dear neighbors,
Renee Nicole Good should still be alive today. She was shot and killed by a masked federal ICE agent in Minneapolis just one day after the federal government deployed over 2,000 federal agents to the metro area. The President has now declared that a day of “reckoning and retribution” is coming. He is grossly obsessed with targeting Minnesota and Minnesotans because we dare to stand up to him.
That same day Renee Nicole Good was killed, ICE agents went onto school property at Roosevelt High School, also in Minneapolis, and began tackling people, handcuffed two staff members, and released chemical weapons on bystanders -- including students. MPS had to close schools for the rest of that week to protect kids from the dangerous actions of ICE in our communities.
Since then, the federal government has shut out Minnesota from the investigation into Renee Good’s murder and has spread lies about Renee and our state. We cannot trust this federal government, which for months has been unleashing chaos and terror in our neighborhoods. ICE has kidnapped residents, dragged a pregnant woman across the pavement, and pepper-sprayed a baby. Just this Wednesday night, another Minnesotan was shot and wounded by these incompetent agents.
I am working with fellow state leaders to get ICE out of our state and face accountability for their unlawful, violent, and oppressive actions. None of their actions have been about public safety as they claim — in fact, ICE is destabilizing our communities and making us all less safe. Masked men are coming in, arresting people without cause, racially profiling our neighbors, and wreaking havoc. In our community, we have seen firsthand the danger of masked men impersonating law enforcement. This is traumatic. I ask residents from all political backgrounds to help demand that ICE leave our state. This has to stop.
At this time, I ask our community to stay safe, to exercise your rights without engaging physically, and to look out for one another. I am so thankful for the Minnesotans who have showed up, peacefully protested, and lifted up Renee’s legacy.
Below are resources to familiarize yourself with, as well as connections to community organizations that are providing important training opportunities.
Day of Truth & Freedom, Jan. 23
As we have all seen in the news, on social media, or even in our own neighborhoods, ICE's violent and lawless enforcement surge is underway in Minnesota. It has cost the life of Renee Nicole Good. It continues to tear apart families, destabilize communities, and violate the freedoms of Minnesotans across our state.
We can't move forward as if this is normal. It is not. Violence against any neighbor diminishes us all.
There will be a collective day of action across our state: ICE OUT OF MN on Friday, January 23, where people across Minnesota will take part in a shared, statewide pause of:
No work (except emergency services)
No school
No shopping or consumer spending
Instead, people will spend the day with family, neighbors, and community and join together to march and rally in downtown Minneapolis at 2:00 PM.
This must stop. More information about this event here.
