We are writing to ask you to take action for Keith Porter.
On New Year’s Eve in Los Angeles, Keith Porter, a Black father and U.S. citizen, was shot and killed outside his home by an off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent using an ICE-issued firearm. This is the first known case under the Trump administration of an immigration officer killing a U.S. citizen.
The Los Angeles Police Department initially described Keith Porter as a “suspect” and an “active shooter,” and publicly praised the ICE agent involved. To date, the agent has not been named or arrested.
Keith Porter was a father, a neighbor, and a member of his community. He leaves behind two daughters, ages 9 and 19, who are now navigating life without him.
This case is not an anomaly. It reflects the dangerous reality Black and Brown communities face under aggressive immigration enforcement and the Trump administration’s cruelty toward communities of color. When ICE is empowered to operate with impunity, no one in our communities is truly safe. What happened to Keith Porter could happen to any of us.
Community organizers in Los Angeles, including Melina Abdullah of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles and Keith Porter’s cousin, Jsané Tyler, are leading efforts to demand accountability. Color Of Change stands with them and is calling for immediate action.
We are demanding that:
- The ICE agent who killed Keith Porter be publicly named and arrested
- Full accountability and prosecution be pursued
- ICE’s role and presence in our communities be urgently reevaluated
- Public safety systems be reimagined to prevent further harm to Black communities
LAPD and city leadership must be held accountable for their response and for the dangerous precedent this sets.
