After a nearly six-year pause, the U.S. Department of Education will again garnish the wages of student loan borrowers ([link removed]) who are in default — a move that would remove 15% of a borrower’s paycheck.
There are more than 5 million borrowers in default nationwide, a number that is expected to grow.
Public Source reporter Maddy Franklin found some expert advice on avoiding wage garnishment:
* Check your loan status and ask for forbearance.
* Consider consolidating your loans.
* Only use trusted sources of information and don’t pay for loan counseling.
