During the Great Depression, the New Deal put millions of Americans to work constructing civic buildings, roads, bridges, parks and other community spaces and adorning them with public artworks.

Join the Living New Deal and KALW for a community conversation about the lasting imprint of FDR’s New Deal on the Bay Area and what a new New Deal could do today!

Meet the Creatives:

Sheryl Kaskowitz, creator of The Public Works ([link removed]) , a KALW Crosscurrents series that explores the history and legacy of the New Deal in the Bay Area, from public spaces to the public good. Sheryl is author of A Chance to Harmonize: ([link removed] ) How FDR's Hidden Music Unit Sought to Save America from the Great Depression—One Song at a Time ([link removed] ) . She is a proud member of KALW's Audio Academy class of 2024.

John Rogers's PBS documentary, A Balcony on the World ([link removed]) , brings San Francisco's landmark Aquatic Bathhouse, its fantastic murals and political controversies to light. Now a national park and home to the San Francisco Maritime Museum, the iconic Art Moderne building on San Francisco Bay and its storied artworks are considered a master work of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Excerpts of John's documentary will be featured.

Alexis Harte is a Peabody and Annie Awards-winning singer-songwriter, composer, film producer and co-founder of New Deal Spotlights—a media campaign engaging a younger generation with the New Deal through video. His work includes the musical short film, “Your Rose Garden," ([link removed]) a celebration of the Berkeley Rose Garden.

Two blocks from Montgomery BART/MUNI. There are several garages within two blocks of the event location. Free street parking from 7:00pm.


T he nonprofit Living New Deal is documenting the vast legacy the New Deal (1933-1942) left to America and the spirit of public service that inspired it. Through crowdsourcing, we’re building an interactive map of the thousands of public spaces and public works the New Deal built during the Great Depression. We’re teaching Americans about New Deal history, policies and programs and the people who led the nation through the hardest of hard times.

KALW serves the public with independent, innovative, and trusted local and global news, music, and culture programming that informs listeners, connects the diverse communities of the Bay Area, and helps train the next generation of public media makers.
