Dear John,
Virginia’s legislative session officially starts today. Over the next two months, state delegates and senators will be at the state capitol in Richmond making decisions that directly affect our communities, our rights, and our day-to-day lives.
From public safety and housing affordability to free speech and protections from discrimination, what happens during this session matters. We’ll be paying close attention and staying engaged to make sure our community’s concerns are heard and taken seriously. We’ll be advocating for the issues and bills that matter most to our community.
Our Priorities This Session Include:
1. 287(g) Statewide Ban: ICE has partnered with local sheriff departments through 287(g) agreements across Virginia, leading to community members being targeted, harassed, and deported based on perceived political views or ethnicity. A statewide ban would help ensure local law enforcement focuses on keeping communities safe, rather than spreading fear or acting as an extension of federal immigration enforcement.
2. Definition of Islamophobia bill: As Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate continue to rise across the country, Virginia needs a clear definition of Islamophobia in law. Having a definition helps acknowledge the harm our community faces and creates a foundation for stronger protections and accountability.
3. Opposition to the IHRA definition of Antisemitism: We believe in fighting antisemitism in all its forms. At the same time, the IHRA definition, which states that criticism of Israel is antisemitism, has often been used to shut down legitimate criticism of Israeli government policies and silence pro-Palestinian voices. This has created a chilling effect on free speech and advocacy for human rights, and we oppose any approach that limits the ability to speak out against injustice.
4. Creation of a MENA Advisory Board: A Middle East and North African Advisory Board would support MENA businesses, elevate community concerns, and create a direct line to the governor’s office. Other communities in Virginia already have advisory boards, including Asian, Latino, and Israeli communities, and MENA communities deserve the same recognition and representation.
We also want to hear from you, so we can include your specific concerns in our discussions with lawmakers. Take our VA policy survey today!

As the session moves forward, we’ll continue meeting with lawmakers, building partnerships, and organizing our community around these priorities. Change happens when people stay involved and hold their leaders accountable.
This legislative session is a chance to push Virginia in a more just and inclusive direction. We’re ready to show up, speak out, and make sure our community has a seat at the table.
