Dear John,

The Israeli government’s use of humanitarian aid for leverage during the Gaza War has been an outrage. Nothing could be more immoral, and out of touch with the values that I was raised with.

But today there is a response. Senator Ron Wyden just introduced a bill that would prevent that from happening again – not just in Gaza, but in any conflict around the world.

Join me in getting more Senators to support this bill.

Senator Wyden studied what happened in Gaza and crafted his bill – the Accountability for Withholding Aid and Relief Essentials (AWARE) Act – with those lessons in mind. The bill would prevent governments from restricting aid anywhere in the world. When a country does block aid, this bill uses targeted sanctions to hold senior officials accountable.

This bill also sends a strong message to the current Israeli government that it must never again use humanitarian aid as a weapon of war. That message is important now as the people of Gaza continue to suffer from all that’s happened over the past two years.

The United States must make it clear that ensuring access to humanitarian aid is not optional; it is a core moral responsibility and a reflection of our values.
