Dear Neighbor,

I hope you are well. We're less than two weeks away from my Inclusive Post-High School Resource Fair! Make sure you sign up below. This week I have a surplus of information for you, including my upcoming district office hours, a recap of the Perkiomen Project press conference, a scholarship opportunity and more!

As always, I hope you find the information below useful.

Important Updates/Highlights

Upcoming Office Hours

Heads up! My district office will be closing at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, for staff training and will be closed all day on Monday, Jan. 19, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

We will re-open on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 9:30 a.m.

Perkiomen Project Press Conference Recap

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Hoy Park and those who tuned in live for my press conference last week, which covered the completion of the Perkiomen Mapping & Flood Mitigation Study.

While the completion of the project is a critical step, it’s only the first. Now our focus shifts to identifying funding for achievable flood mitigation projects in our counties and municipalities. You can follow along through my social media accounts or by subscribing to my weekly email at www.pahouse.com/Webster

Thank you to our three Montgomery County Commissioners, Jamilia Winder (Chair), Neil Makhija (Vice Chair) and Tom DiBello, representatives from the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy, contractors, planning commissions, municipal officials and partnering environmental groups for your time and dedication to this project.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day – January 19

This upcoming Monday, Jan. 19, we celebrate and honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, legacy, leadership and commitment to the Civil Rights Movement. Now more than ever, it’s important that we create a better fellowship among each other.

It’s a time to look around us and recognize how important those rights are for every single one of us. It’s a time to reassert not just his words, but his dedication to equality, individual rights and freedoms. Let’s all make a pledge to fairness, balance, justice and truth. And remember, find some time this weekend to volunteer, spread acts of kindness and help create that better community.

Statement on ICE Violence

Before I make any statement, I put thought and time into what I want to say like any responsible person does. In light of the recent actions and violence perpetuated by ICE, my pause is due to how I feel—as a veteran, a father, an elected official. To watch our country be torn apart in the way it is, especially in the manner that it is being fractured, is both heartbreaking and frustrating.

In the United States right now there are masked, unidentified bullies parading around as law enforcement. It's Un-American. In our great country, lethal force is not to be used recklessly, whether we’re talking specifically about military operations and rules of engagement or local police activities. And never against our own citizens. And especially if we’re talking about civil procedures like immigration. It’s not clear why ICE needs to be armed, on the streets of our country, to begin with.

The use of lethal force, the bypassing of due process, the singling out of our neighbors based off physical characteristics is something that everyone should be angry about, personally offended by, and compelled to speak out against each time it happens.

As I've stated before, we're all affected when our neighbors are targeted. Our country, as a whole, is at its best when we are united. The drive to divide us is pure evil.

Road Alerts – Construction on Park Ave Scheduled

Heads up, neighbors! PennDOT has announced that utility construction on Park Avenue (between Borton Road and Jode Road) in Lower Providence Township is scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 19, through Thursday, April 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

There will be a lane closure with flagging Mondays through Thursdays as a part of a safety improvement project.

Drivers are advised to plan accordingly and practice safe driving habits while crews are at work.

Visiting the PA Farm Show

On Tuesday, I spent the morning at the Pennsylvania Farm Show and had a great time checking out everything it had to offer! I stopped by the famous butter sculpture, which highlighted our nation’s upcoming 250th birthday, grabbed a milkshake from Tina at the PA Dairymen’s Association and even saw a wood-framed bike!

Agriculture is one of Pennsylvania’s largest industries and is worth more than $132 billion per year. In Montgomery County, we don’t have a ton of agriculture, but with the third largest population in the Commonwealth, we depend on the rest of PA for our food.

We also do work within the industry, especially in the hardwood sector where Montco manufactures cabinets and hardwood flooring. The PA Farm Show is always a blast, and I’m already looking forward to next year!

Recent/Upcoming Observances

Human Trafficking Awareness Month – January

January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Human trafficking—modern-day slavery—remains a serious issue in our society. While I continue to support legislative efforts to combat human trafficking and assist victims and survivors, this month is an important opportunity to raise awareness and learn to recognize the signs to help prevent it.

Local organizations like MCAT, Victim Services of Montgomery County, Laurel House, and Mission Kids provide information, resources, and help to those who have been victimized by human trafficking. If you or someone you know has been a victim, I encourage you to connect with one of the organizations above or contact my office for more information.
