In the weeks ahead, several states could begin their own mid-decade redraws. 

In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis has called for a special session of the legislature to try to pass a new, more extreme gerrymander. It’s clear: Some politicians in this country are building their political strategy around manipulating maps to silence the will of the people.

No one should have the power to rewrite the rules of democracy without hearing from their constituents. We’re mobilizing voters to help them stay informed and speak out against gerrymanders across the country — and the work of the fair maps movement is already paying off.

In Missouri, organizers have gathered the signatures of 300,000 citizens to mount a ballot initiative to overturn the deeply unpopular gerrymander that the legislature passed last fall.

In Indiana, voter education and mobilization efforts led to a bipartisan coalition of state senators rejecting a proposed gerrymander in December. Similar efforts to pass a gerrymander in Kansas are also running into legislative hurdles, thanks to clear public opposition.

That’s why right now, in Florida, we’re working with partners on the ground to train communities to fight back against the legislature’s attempt to redraw their congressional map before the midterm elections.
