National Health Care Spending Increased 7.2 Percent In 2024 As Utilization Remained Elevated

In an ahead-of-print article published today, Micah Hartman and colleagues at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released their 2024 health care spending report.

Key takeaways from the report include:

  • U.S. health care spending rose 7.2% in 2024 to $5.3 trillion, mirroring 2023’s growth and driven by increased use and intensity of hospital care, physician services, and prescription drugs.
  • Insurance coverage remained high, with 91.8% of the population insured in 2024, only slightly below the 2023 peak.
  • Health spending continued to outpace economic growth, increasing health care’s share of the economy from 17.7% in 2023 to 18.0% in 2024.
