On January 7, the public was horrified to watch video footage of an ICE agent shooting and killing 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three, at point blank range. Just a day later, CBP agents shot two people in Portland, Oregon. These are not isolated incidents. In the last five months, immigration officers have shot at least nine people. Multiple people have died as a result. These acts of violence are the predictable results of an out-of-control agency acting with impunity. And sadly, Congress helped pave the way. Last year, legislators gave DHS a windfall of $170 billion to supersize its deportation force and detention network, making ICE’s budget larger than most of the world’s militaries. This escalating violence shows exactly why Congress cannot give another dollar to ICE and CBP without real guardrails and accountability. These agencies cannot keep weaponizing our tax dollars to inflict terror on our communities. Friend, we need your voice again. Send a message to your legislators now to refuse to increase funding for ICE and CBP. We demand real accountability and an end to this state-sponsored violence.
