Legislative Update (01.13.2026)
________________________________________________________________________
Over the past week, Minnesotans and people across the country have watched and reacted to a tragic incident involving ICE in Minnesota. Opinions formed almost instantly. Many people decided within moments whether the actions taken were right or wrong.
I want to encourage something different.
What most of us saw was a brief snapshot, roughly 30 seconds of video, and from that, strong conclusions were drawn. But real understanding requires looking at the totality of the situation, not just a single moment pulled out of context.
One reason the reaction was so immediate and so intense is because certain individuals recognized how useful the situation could be for advancing their own narrative. Whether they are elected officials, political operatives, or everyday citizens caught up in the moment, some rushed to capitalize on tragedy before facts were known. They abused a loss of life to push an agenda. That behavior is truly despicable and serves no one but themselves.
Two human beings came into contact that day. The questions that matter are not limited to what happened in the final seconds, but how they arrived there in the first place. Why were they in the same location at the same time? What forces, pressures, or decisions led to that moment?
Rather than lowering the temperature, some local leaders chose to do the opposite. Instead of urging patience, restraint, and a commitment to facts, statements from the Governor’s office and the City of Minneapolis have consistently fanned the flames. That approach appears designed more to distract and deflect than to bring clarity or calm. Leadership should seek truth and stability, not amplify outrage for political advantage.
What concerns me just as much as the incident itself is how we respond to it as a society.
If someone believes the shooting was wrong, they are free to express that view publicly through protests, demonstrations, and online activism. That is their right. But if someone believes the ICE agent acted in self-defense, expressing that view often comes with harassment, intimidation, or fear of retaliation. One viewpoint is widely encouraged. The other is treated as unacceptable.
That is not healthy. That is not honest discourse. And that is not who we should be.
Minnesota should be a place where people can express differing views peacefully and respectfully, without fear. We should be able to seek facts without being forced into ideological corners.
Despite the growing divide between right and left, I will continue to seek out and work toward the common ground that still exists between us. The upcoming legislative session will be challenging and, at times, emotional. There will be real debate and disagreement. But it also presents an opportunity to course-correct and show Minnesotans what good governance can and should look like.
Good governance means keeping our focus on representing the people we serve, not chasing the ideological games of Washington, D.C., or the latest outrage cycle on social media. Minnesotans expect thoughtful leadership, practical solutions, and steady hands, not performative politics. We should leave the theatrics to Congress and the influencers.
As your representative, I remain committed to fairness, transparency, and respectful dialogue. I will gladly work with anyone who shares this vision, no matter their party, politics, or background. Our state deserves leadership that prioritizes people over politics, and that is the approach I will continue to take at the Capitol.
Thank you for staying engaged and please don't hesitate to reach out with your thoughts.
Sincerely,
Terry Stier
