January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in Canada, an opportunity for everyone to learn more about dementia and its profound impact on those living with and supporting those with dementia.
The Canadian healthcare system isn’t equipped for many in the 2SLGBTQI community who get dementia.We might get equal care, but it’s often not up to par or inclusive of our specific needs.

Despite our best efforts, the Government of Alberta was able to bring an end to the injunction against Bill 26 on the basis of its use of the notwithstanding clause. This is not a total ban:some categories of youth will remain eligible < [link removed] > to receive puberty blockers and hormones.
The fight in Alberta isn’t over.Egale Canada and Skipping Stone, represented by lawyers from McCarthy Tétrault LLP, are continuing legal action against the Government of Alberta, challenging the constitutionality of Bill 26 on new grounds.
We are fighting for a society where all people are able to liveauthentic and full lives.

The rise in anti-2SLGBTQI and specifically anti-trans hate is directly linked to the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation (MDM).
To counter this, Egale has created resources and explainers to empower everyone with the knowledge they needto have informed conversations on complex issues and topics related to 2SLGBTQI communities, including how to recognize, understand, and respond effectively to harmful misinformation and disinformation used against 2SLGBTQI communities.

In Egale's and the National Institute on Ageing's research report, Coming Out and Coming in to Living with Dementia < [link removed] > , we found that 2SLGBTQI communities who experienced social inequities (e.g., due to systems of homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, and racism) are at a higher risk of premature cognitive decline, including dementia.
This report provides specific action-oriented recommendations to enhance support for 2SLGBTQI people living with dementia and their primary unpaid carers.
