Dear MoveOn member,
It’s been over a week since Trump launched an unauthorized attack on Venezuela, capturing its president and claiming that the U.S. will now “run Venezuela.”
Last week, the Senate took a huge first step toward blocking Trump’s aggressive militarism in Venezuela, but we still have a long way to go. Five Republican senators joined Democrats in advancing a measure that would block any future military action in Venezuela without prior congressional approval.1 Now, the bill is set for a final Senate vote this week, and if it passes, it’ll then head to the House.
Right now, it’s crucial that we keep the pressure up. Send a letter to your members of Congress now, demanding that they continue to vote against Trump’s reckless power play in Venezuela!
Trump ran on an “America first” platform, with a promise of no new wars and keeping the U.S. out of international conflict.2 But instead of serving the American people and tackling the many problems we are facing here at home—like the skyrocketing cost of living—Trump is focused on occupying Venezuela in order to hoard more power for himself.
Trump recently admitted that he expects the U.S. to be running Venezuela and controlling their oil for years.3 And Venezuela is just the beginning. In the week since his attack, Trump has threatened similar military action against numerous other countries, including Colombia, Cuba, Iran, Greenland, and Mexico.4 This clearly isn’t “America first.”
Venezuelans should run Venezuela, and our elected officials should work for us, not Trump and his oil donors. Send your letter now: Demand Congress rein in Trump’s aggressive militarism, prevent a U.S. occupation of Venezuela, and focus on serving the American people!
Thanks for all you do.
