John,
It’s the first day of the 2026 legislative session - the first official day of the broken GOP supermajority in the Iowa Senate. Normally there wouldn’t be any new faces halfway through the cycle, but with our special election victories, we are happy to welcome Senator Catelin Drey and Senator Renee Hardman to our growing Democratic caucus.
Senator Drey was sworn in this past September, and this morning, we witnessed history being made as Renee Hardman was sworn in as the first Black woman in the Iowa Senate!

With a bolstered Democratic caucus due to a trio of special election victories, we are heading into this session with confidence that Iowans stand with us on issues that matter most to them. Republicans will surely use their tired, old playbook of distracting from what Iowans have been telling us throughout all of 2025 that they are concerned about.
Working Iowans are worried about the cost of just about everything - from groceries to healthcare to child care to housing - getting too high, while Republican lawmakers help only those who don’t need it. Iowans worried about constant underfunding of their public schools, which hurt kids across the state. They’re worried about their jobs and their futures, and ensuring that the future of this state is a bright one.
Senate Democrats will spend every day of this session fighting for those issues that you have told us keep you up at night.
But we can’t do this without your help.
2026 is our opportunity to reshape the legislature again as we recruit candidates, knock doors, and listen to Iowans before November.
If you donate today, you can help us make sure that when we come into session next year, we’ll have even more Democrats at our side to fight with us. [[link removed]]

We are grateful to have you in our corner.
Let’s get to work and ensure that come January 2027, we have good news to share.
