They took responsibility for their future — and in doing so, changed the course of history. That spirit is at the heart of Americans for Prosperity’s yearlong “One Small Step” celebration, marking the 250th anniversary of our great nation.
It does two simple but impactful things: It invites Americans to reconnect with the principles that made this country possible and take simple, meaningful actions to strengthen freedom.

Two hundred fifty years ago, the Declaration was more than words on parchment. It was a bold statement of self-governance and personal responsibility — ordinary people declaring that freedom was worth standing up for.
This moment is especially meaningful this month as we mark the 250th anniversary of Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” — the pamphlet that helped awaken a nation to the power of individual action.
Paine reminded Americans then, as he still does today: “The sun never shined on a cause of greater worth.”
That cause — liberty — has always depended on people willing to step forward.
