Just a few short years ago, I never thought I would be involved in politics.

In 2016, I was a law professor at UC Irvine. My wife, Jane, and I had just welcomed our third child. And we were eager for our children to grow up in the same America we got to grow up in. A kind, inclusive, compassionate country, where we celebrate diversity and expand opportunity for everyone, not just the wealthy and powerful.

But then Donald Trump came along. [[link removed]]

Just minutes into his inaugural address, it was clear how Donald Trump wanted to rule our country. With fear, hatred, resentment, and vengeance. Everything we taught our kids to reject.

Just a few months later, Trump started talking about his abhorrent Muslim ban — going after immigrants who just wanted a better life for their kids. Immigrants just like my parents.

So I took action. I protested in the streets. I was vocal in telling everyone who would listen that Trump was no ordinary Republican — he’s an existential threat to our country.

In 2020, I ran for State Senate on this message in a bright red Republican district that had never been represented by a Democrat. And I won. [[link removed]]

In Sacramento, I fought for everything Donald Trump stood against. I passed legislation to ban gun sales on California state property, authored legislation to end offshore oil drilling, offered support to small businesses during the height of the pandemic, protected survivors of domestic violence, defended reproductive freedom, and so much more.

Now, I’m fighting for those very same priorities in Congress — so that my children, your children, and children all across the country can grow up in a country that is safer and kinder than the one we have now.

Our country deserves so much more than hatred and division. We deserve so much better than Donald Trump and the Republican Party. That’s why I’m not giving up. I’m not giving in. I’m ready to fight like hell for the future of our country — and I hope you are too.

The America I know is a place where we care for our neighbors — not pit them against one another. If that’s the America you know too, then I’m humbly asking for your support.
