The Roadless Rule has protected pristine forestland for the last 25 years. But the Trump administration wants to get rid of it: [link removed]

Dear Friend,

TToday marks the 25th anniversary of the Roadless Rule which protects 58 million acres of forests nationwide.

For a quarter of a century, our nation’s undeveloped forestlands have provided wildlife habitat, outdoor exploration opportunities, and protection for clean drinking water sources for millions of Americans. These cherished public lands have remained safe from clear-cutting, roadbuilding, mining, or oil-and-gas drilling.

The Roadless Rule is popular, despite attempts by politicians to get rid of it. Prior to its enactment, 1.6 million Americans called for protecting of these forestlands in public hearings held nationwide. Politicians aligned with extractive industry have tried to get rid of the Roadless Rule ever since it was enacted in 2001. But decades of advocacy have kept the rule – and the millions of acres of forests it protects – intact.

Last summer, the Trump administration proposed repealing the Roadless Rule entirely. The initial proposal drew extraordinary backlash in the mere 21 days the administration allowed for public comment. More than 625,000 comments flooded into the U.S. Forest Service in response – nearly all of which denounced the proposed rollback. Showing up and making our opposition clear is incredibly important in this fight for our public lands.

In 2026, anyone who cherishes public lands must again help protect the Roadless Rule. This coming spring, the Forest Service is expected to continue its attempt to undo this bedrock conservation measure. It plans to issue a proposed rule that will endanger about 45 million acres of backcountry forestlands. Take a moment to learn about the Roadless Rule and stay tuned for more opportunities to take action.
