“Young people don’t vote.” That’s the lie some pundits told Beto when he wanted to visit college campuses during his 2018 Senate race.
But Beto showed up anyway. He held organizing and voter registration events at community colleges, trade schools, four-year universities, and high schools. He was in the quad at public universities, on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and at coffee shops across the street from private colleges.
And it worked. Young voter turnout skyrocketed by more than 500% during early voting!
Beto has taken this same organizing approach to his work with Powered by People. In 2024, our volunteers met young prospective voters all across the state.
We checked their voter registration status, got them onto the rolls, personally stayed in touch with them, answered their questions, and nudged them until they cast their ballot. While young voters nationally turned out at a rate of 42%, the young voters in our program turned out at a rate of 79%. It worked again.
Now, we’re continuing this on-the-ground work as we go full-steam ahead towards the pivotal midterm elections. Beto will be back at the University of Texas at Austin THIS WEEK to register students and get more young people into our proven program. And with your help, we can organize on even more campuses.
Together, we will meet, register, and turn out the voters who will help us win big races up and down the ballot.
