Dear John,

Like so many Oregonians, I am very concerned about the violent event that unfolded yesterday in a hospital parking lot in Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood.

Two people were shot and injured by federal agents in our largest city, an unnecessary incident that comes just one day after a tragic death in Minnesota. We all want peace and safety, but this doesn’t get us there.

While details remain limited, one thing is clear: when a president attempts to govern through fear and hate rather than shared values, and endorses policies that tear families apart, he fosters an environment of recklessness and lawlessness.

The priority right now must be a full, complete investigation of the incident, not more detentions that are terrorizing our immigrant communities. The Attorney General, district attorneys, and I have been clear about our concerns with the excessive use of force by federal agents. Yesterday’s events only heighten the urgent need for transparency and accountability. Oregonians deserve clear answers.

Oregonians know how to stand up and speak out peacefully. We must remain united in peaceful opposition to efforts to tear our communities apart and turn us against one another.

We stand united with Minnesota. We stand together as Oregonians. We continue to call for safety in our communities.

With resolve and gratitude,

Tina
