I’ve been part of this movement long enough to remember people laughing at the idea of $15/hr. As of today, more workers live in states with minimum wages at or above $15/hr than in states with the pitiful federal minimum wage of $7.25. Who’s laughing now?

8.3 million workers got a raise when the clock struck midnight last week. Those raises didn’t just happen: workers fought for them. Every picket line and strike, every conversation we’ve had with our coworkers, and every ally we picked up along the way got us here.

Wealthy CEOs don't know the first thing about "affordability" and the rising cost of living. But those of us living paycheck to paycheck feel that struggle with every bill and every grocery trip. So while I’m celebrating today, I know this struggle isn’t over.

If you’re reading this, chances are you know what it’s like to struggle to afford the basics we all need. In many states, to live “comfortably”, you need to make more than $100k as a single adult. And here in California, that number is almost $120,000.

I’d need to work nearly 120 hours a week, every week of the year, to get there. It’s just not possible.

Here in California, thanks to my union – the California Fast Food Workers Union – we make a minimum of $20. But it’s still not enough to live the life we all deserve.

So while I celebrate workers making more, I know that the fight for a union is the fight that will win us the dignified lives that our bosses would never give us otherwise.
