Outgoing Master of Holles Street downplays impact of abortion law

Listening to Prof Shane Higgins’ interview on RTÉ last weekend, one could not escape the extent to which abortion dominated the discussion, rather than a focus on achieving the best possible outcomes for both mothers and babies during pregnancy.

Prof Higgins appeared on Brendan O’Connor’s programme, presented by Dearbhail McDonald, as his time as Master of Holles Street Hospital draws to a close.

He made a point of stressing that the number of abortions taking place at the hospital were lower than he had expected would happen. When pressed, he stated that “less than 200 a year” were occurring at the National Maternity Hospital - a figure presented in isolation and without context. As a result, listeners were left with the misleading impression that the new law has had only a minimal impact on abortion numbers.

New data: Over 10,000 women did not return for abortion after three-day wait

In reply to a Parliamentary Question submitted by Deputy Carol Nolan TD, the HSE confirmed earlier this week that in 2022 and 2023, 3,933 women didn’t return for a second abortion consultation with a GP after the three-day waiting period.

When this information is added to previously released data, it confirms that in the 5 year period between 2019 and 2024, 10,426 women did not return for an abortion after the waiting period had elapsed.

These comprehensive new figures fundamentally undermine claims by the Irish Family Planning Association and others that the three-day waiting period serves no purpose other than to obstruct access to abortion and should therefore be abolished.

Paul Murphy falls silent in exchange with PLC

When the Pro Life Campaign challenged People Before Profit–Solidarity TD Paul Murphy over his back-pedalling on abortion after his bill was defeated before Christmas, he shot back on X with: “Sorry what? Can some evidence of my back pedalling be provided please?”

We provided the evidence and told him the ball was now back in his court - and that’s the last we heard from him! [See exchange above]

Politicians must be held to account at all times but particularly when they attempt to introduce bills permitting abortion on request up to birth dressed up as something else. Unborn babies cannot speak for themselves, which is precisely why we must speak for them and never relent in doing so.

3.5 million views on YouTube over Christmas

Over the Christmas break, we re-shared a short video posted by a mom about her husband’s reaction to the ultrasound video of their unborn child. What a reaction it got with over 3.5 million views on our YouTube channel!

It’s true that watching a child moving in the womb is the simplest and most effective way to communicate the pro life message.

** Eilís Mulroy speaking on ‘Mornings with Kieran’ on Spirit Radio
------------------------------------------------------------

The Dáil recorded its narrowest vote of the current session before Christmas, rejecting by just two votes an attempt to restore legislation that would remove the three-day waiting period for abortion on request.

While the Bill has fallen for now, the closeness of the vote has reignited debate about the direction of abortion law in Ireland - particularly at a time when abortion numbers continue to rise.

To help us understand what this vote means for the country, politically and socially, Eilís Mulroy was on 'Mornings with Kieran' on Spirit Radio Tuesday morning discussing the failed attempt before Christmas by Paul Murphy TD to progress a radical abortion Bill through the Dáil.
