Illinois has spoken. Energy affordability has quickly become a top issue for voters across the country, and the state’s new legislation lays out a path to address this challenge.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker just signed the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability (CRGA) Actto reduce electricity costs, modernize infrastructure, and position Illinois to better compete for business and investment.

CRGApassed the General Assembly on October 30 by a constitutional majority, demonstrating the broad bipartisan popularity of the legislation’s wide-ranging, holistic, and pragmatic approach to energy affordability. Private sector support organized by Ceres was critical to getting this bill over the finish line. Ahead of a key deadline, major businesses operating in Illinois—including Akamai Technologies, dsm-Firmenich, HA Sustainable Infrastructure (HASI), Leopardo Construction, Leopardo Energy, Rivian, and Sealed—released a letter supporting CRGA’s passage.

Importantly, CRGA upholds Illinois’ commitment to reducing pollution and addressing climate change—because, today, clean energy is also the most affordable energy. Solar and wind, along with the battery storage to preserve that power, are currently the least expensive and quickest energy resources to build.

Now, Ceres and businesses in Illinois are thrilled to be celebrating Illinois’s leadership and one of the most important and largest state policy clean energy and affordability victories this year.
