Trump's military strike on Venezuela set the stage for a critical showdown in Congress. With a vote in the Senate TODAY, Congress must reassert its constitutional authority over warmaking, or Trump will be emboldened to attack Mexico, Denmark, Cuba, Iran, and Colombia. Yesterday, Trump's latest act of aggression targeted Venezuela AND Russia. The U.S. military seized a Venezuelan oil tanker, which sailed under the Russian flag and was accompanied by a Russian submarine.1 Trump is pushing the U.S. toward a major military showdown with global superpowers. Democrats in the House and Senate are moving quickly to vote on a war powers resolution to end Trump's war on Venezuela.2,3 Congress must do its job, protect the Constitution, and check the power of a reckless strongman who is putting us all in danger. These votes are imminent, and we must put pressure on our lawmakers to end this war. Sign the petition: Pass a war powers resolution to stop Trump's war on Venezuela! The Senate is set to vote today on a war powers resolution. And Rep. Jim McGovern is pushing for the same in the House, calling Trump's invasion of Venezuela a "war on behalf of the oil lobby."4 The Trump administration talked openly about taking control of Venezuela's oil reserves for months. Now, Trump has declared that he will run Venezuela, and says he will collaborate with U.S. corporations to “get the oil flowing.”5 This is an inflection point in Congress, in our country, and in the future of U.S. military action across the globe. Congress must take up its constitutional responsibility and check Trump's runaway aggression. Sign the petition: Urge Congress to immediately pass a war powers resolution to end Trump's military actions in Venezuela. Thanks for taking action,
