Team, it's been one year since wildfires erupted in Los Angeles County.
Without warning, almost 180,000 Southern Californians were forced to evacuate their homes amid one of the costliest climate disasters in our nation's history. Some escaped with their families, pets, and a few precious belongings; some with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Thirty-one people were killed in the fires, and it's estimated that 409 more lives were lost due to indirect fire impacts.1
This wasn't an isolated tragedy—it was the climate crisis at work. Fire season is now year-round in California, fueled by worsening climate impacts like record-breaking heat, prolonged drought, low humidity, and high winds.
We have a limited time to kickstart global change, avoid the worst climate disasters, and protect our future. Will you add your name to our petition and urge the California legislature to protect communities with bold climate solutions this year? |
Devastation like the Los Angeles wildfires isn't natural. It's a result of corporate polluters' greed after they spent decades driving climate change, knowing that it would intensify extreme weather disasters like these fires—all while they raked in trillions of dollars in profits. These climate disasters are catastrophic, both in the moment and long-term for communities across the state. They're creating a widespread affordability crisis as energy, housing, and insurance costs skyrocket in the aftermath.
As California legislators kick off the year, the one-year anniversary of the fires must serve as a call to action. In response to this climate disaster, lawmakers need to prioritize investment in critical solutions, like clean energy and resilience, that protect health and affordability for Californians.
Sign your name to our petition and tell California lawmakers it's time to step up and protect our communities from climate disasters and their long-term impacts.
Thank you for being part of this movement and taking a stand with us.
