John, when Hurricane Harvey overwhelmed Houston, I was serving on City Council. It was immediately clear that many families could not safely leave their homes, secure medication, or reach essential resources. I did not wait for press conferences or cameras. I put on my boots and knocked on doors to check on seniors, disabled neighbors, parents with young children, and people who were entirely alone.
Community members told me later that they were surprised to see an elected official show up in person, but to me, this is the foundation of public service. Representation is not symbolic. It must be lived. It must meet people where their needs are.
For nearly a year, Houston has gone without a representative in Congress. Families who needed help navigating immigration challenges, federal aid, healthcare appeals, or small-business survival had no congressional office to call. They were left without support because Gov. Greg Abbott chose partisan politics over basic service.
I am running for Congress because representation must be rooted in accountability, responsiveness, and dignity. I believe deeply that government must deliver for everyday people — those who are working hard, caring for family members, building businesses, raising children, navigating rising costs, or planning for retirement.
I have lived these realities myself. When my father battled cancer, my family spent months worried about whether insurance would come through and whether we would be able to afford care. No family should face that kind of fear — and no one should face it alone.
I have approached public service with a focus on outcomes. On City Council, I helped expand access to capital for women and minority entrepreneurs, strengthen public transit systems, and support small businesses throughout our community. I believe in governing with preparation, humility, and a commitment to responsibility.
This runoff election will determine whether Houston has a representative who listens, shows up, and delivers. To reach voters across TX-18, I need to build the grassroots runway that this moment requires.
