This week, five years ago, our democracy was violently threatened.

On January 6, 2021, a mob stormed the United States Capitol to overturn a free and fair election. Capitol Police officers were assaulted, the building was ransacked, and the peaceful transfer of power was put at risk. It was an attempt to undermine our democracy and Constitution.

Five years later, the truth still matters. And it matters that on day one of his term, the President pardoned 1,600 insurrectionists. Pardoning those who participated in the January 6 attack sends a dangerous message and weakens the rule of law our democracy depends on.

We cannot allow political violence to be excused, rewritten, or normalized. Giving these individuals sweeping pardons proves that to Trump, loyalty matters more than the law and obedience will be rewarded.
