Nobody should have to send texts like these to our loved ones:

But five years ago today, I did.

I was trapped in the House Gallery during the worst attack on the US Capitol since 1812 — scared for my life, recovering from knee surgery, and armed with only my cane against insurrectionists beating on the doors, a sound I can still hear. I wasn’t sure I was going to make it out of the Capitol alive.

The trauma of that horrific day is still with me, and still with our country.

It’s a constant reminder of how fragile our democracy is, and why I’ll never stop fighting for accountability for those involved, including the assault’s culprit — Donald Trump — who continues to spew the same hateful, dangerous rhetoric from the Oval Office.

That’s why I spoke up in today’s hearing and will continue to tell my story so people don’t forget what happened on that day. And it’s why, along with other Members of Congress, I’m pushing forward with our case Lee v. Trump to hold Trump accountable in the courts.
